Description
The 7 Segment BCD Display 0.5 Inch Common Cathode is a simple and reliable LED display module designed for numeric and basic alphanumeric applications. It contains eight individual LEDs arranged as seven segments (a–g) plus a decimal point (DP), allowing numbers from 0–9 and several letters to be displayed.
The Common Cathode (CC) configuration connects the common pins to ground, while the individual segment pins are controlled to illuminate the required LEDs. This makes the display easy to interface with microcontrollers, counters, driver ICs, and other digital circuits.
7-segment displays are widely used because they provide bright, easy-to-read characters while requiring relatively simple control circuitry.

7-Segment Display Structure
The display contains eight LED elements identified as a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and DP. By switching different segments ON or OFF, different numbers and characters can be formed.
For example, displaying 0 requires all segments except the center segment g, while displaying 1 uses the two right-side segments b and c.
Pin Configuration
| Pin No. | Pin Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | e | Controls lower-left segment |
| 2 | d | Controls bottom segment |
| 3 | COM | Common cathode connection |
| 4 | c | Controls lower-right segment |
| 5 | DP | Controls decimal point |
| 6 | b | Controls upper-right segment |
| 7 | a | Controls top segment |
| 8 | COM | Common cathode connection |
| 9 | f | Controls upper-left segment |
| 10 | g | Controls center segment |
Common Cathode Operation
In a Common Cathode 7-segment display, the common cathode pins are connected to ground, while the individual segment pins receive the required drive signal.
The display can be controlled directly using a suitable digital circuit or microcontroller. A current-limiting resistor should be used with LED segments to help protect the LEDs and ensure proper operation.
Digit Display Codes
For the commonly used active-low bit pattern shown below:
| Digit | h g f e d c b a | Hex Code |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 | C0 |
| 1 | 1 1 1 1 1 0 0 1 | F9 |
| 2 | 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 | A4 |
| 3 | 1 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 | B0 |
| 4 | 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 | 99 |
| 5 | 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 | 92 |
| 6 | 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 | 82 |
| 7 | 1 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 | F8 |
| 8 | 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 | 80 |
| 9 | 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 | 90 |
Common Cathode vs Common Anode
When selecting a 7-segment display, it is important to choose the correct configuration. Common Cathode (CC) and Common Anode (CA) displays use different electrical connections and control logic, so a circuit or program designed for one type may not work correctly with the other.
Applications
- Digital counters
- Electronic clocks and timers
- Voltage and current meters
- Temperature displays
- Sensor value indicators
- Measurement equipment
- Arduino projects
- Microcontroller projects
- Calculator-style displays
- Multi-digit numeric displays
- Industrial control panels
- DIY electronics projects
Common Cathode (CC) 7 Segment Display
The common cathode display is commonly called CC display. In this type the common pin on the 7-segment display is connected to all the eight Cathode pins of the LEDs. So In order to make this type of seven segment display to work we should connect he Com pin to the Ground pin and power the other pins with Vcc (+5V typically).
Common Anode (CA) 7 Segment DisplayThe common anode display is commonly called CA display. In this type the common pin on the 7-segment display is connected to all the eight Anode pins of the LEDs. So In order to make this type of seven segment display to work we should connect he Com pin to the Vcc (+5V typically) and ground the required segment pin to turn it on.
