Description
The NEMA17 6-wire stepper motor is a high-torque motor designed for applications that require precise positioning and controlled movement. With a 1.8° step angle, it provides 200 steps per revolution and is suitable for 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, robotics, and other motion-control systems.
Its 6-wire configuration allows operation in either unipolar mode using the center taps or bipolar mode with the center taps disconnected. Bipolar operation can provide higher torque and is compatible with common stepper motor drivers.
Key Specifications
- Frame Size: NEMA 17 (42×42mm faceplate)
- Body Length: 48mm (42-48 motor)
- Step Angle: 1.8° (200 steps per revolution)
- Rated Current: 1.7A per phase
- Voltage Range: Typically driven at 12–24V DC using a constant-current driver
- Holding Torque: Generally 40–45 Ncm (56–63 oz-in)
- Shaft Diameter: 5mm, standard D-shaped shaft
Core Applications
- 3D Printers: Suitable for high-load Y-axes, dual Z-axes, and heavy direct-drive extruders.
- CNC Routers & Laser Cutters: Provides precise linear positioning for small-scale desktop engraving and cutting machines.
- Automation & Robotics: Suitable for precise speed and position control in DIY and automated systems.
Typical Wiring (4-Wire Bipolar Setup)
For use with a standard 4-wire bipolar stepper motor driver:
- Phase A: Often Black (A+) and Green (A−)
- Phase B: Often Red (B+) and Blue (B−)
- Center Taps: Usually White and Yellow; disconnect and insulate these wires when using a 4-wire driver.
Set the motor driver’s current limit appropriately for the motor’s 1.7A rated current to help prevent overheating and missed steps.
How to Connect to Standard 4-Pin Drivers (A4988, DRV8825, TMC2209)
To use this 6-wire motor with a standard 4-pin bipolar driver, leave the two center-tap wires disconnected and insulated.
- Identify the Pairs: Use a multimeter to measure resistance between the wires. The outer ends of each coil will show the highest resistance, while the center tap will show approximately half the resistance to either end.
- 4-Wire Bipolar Mode: Connect the two outer wires of one coil to Phase A and the two outer wires of the other coil to Phase B. This configuration provides the highest available torque for the motor.
