Alternative Servo Motors
SG90S Plastic Gear Servo Motor and MG995 High Torque Metal Gear Servo Motor are alternative options depending on the required torque, gear type, and application.
Selecting your Servo Motor
Most hobby servo motors operate from approximately 4.8V to 6.5V and are commonly powered at +5V. Standard hobby servos generally provide 0° to 180° rotation, while continuous-rotation models are available when full rotational movement is required.
The MG90S uses metal gears, making it more suitable for applications where greater durability and longer operating life are required compared with plastic-gear servos.
Torque is another important factor when selecting a servo motor. The MG90S provides up to 2.2 kg/cm of torque at 6V, allowing the required load to be determined based on the distance from the servo shaft.
How to use a Servo Motor
The MG90S has three wires: Brown for ground, Red for power, and Orange for the PWM control signal. Connect the motor to a suitable power supply and send PWM signals through the Orange wire.
The servo can be controlled using a 555 timer or microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, PIC, ARM, or Raspberry Pi. A typical PWM signal operates at 50Hz with a 20ms period. The pulse width can vary according to the desired servo position, with approximately 1ms corresponding to 0°, 1.5ms to 90°, and 2ms to 180°.
Applications
- Actuation in biped robots, hexapod robots, robotic arms, and other robotic systems
- Steering mechanisms in RC toys and models
- Position-controlled robotics projects without feedback
- Lightweight multi-DOF robots, including humanoid robots
- RC airplanes and quadcopters
