Description
The TowerPro SG-90 Servo Motor is a small plastic-gear servo suitable for applications where precise angular positioning and low weight are important. It is commonly used in robotic arms, biped and hexapod robots, RC toy steering systems, and other multi-degree-of-freedom projects.
Wire Configuration
| Wire Number | Wire Color | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brown | Ground wire connected to the system ground |
| 2 | Red | Power supply, typically +5V |
| 3 | Orange | PWM signal input used to control the servo |
SG-90 Servo Motor Equivalent
SG90S Plastic Gear 360° Servo Motor and MG995 High Torque Metal Gear 180° Servo Motor are alternative options depending on the required rotation range and torque.
Selecting your Servo Motor
Most hobby servo motors operate from approximately 4.8V to 6.5V and are commonly used at +5V. Standard hobby servos generally provide 0° to 180° rotation, while continuous-rotation models are available when full rotational movement is required.
Plastic gears are suitable for lightweight applications, while metal-gear servos are a better choice for applications requiring higher strength and extended operation.
How to use a Servo Motor
The SG-90 has three wires: Brown for ground, Red for power, and Orange for the PWM control signal. Connect the motor to a suitable +5V supply and provide a PWM signal through the Orange wire.
The servo can be controlled using a 555 timer or microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, PIC, ARM, or Raspberry Pi. A typical control signal uses a 50Hz frequency with a 20ms period. The pulse width can generally vary from approximately 1ms to 2ms:
- 1ms pulse → approximately 0°
- 1.5ms pulse → approximately 90°
- 2ms pulse → approximately 180°
By varying the PWM pulse width, the servo can be positioned anywhere within its 0°–180° operating range.
