Description
The 8×8 LED Dot Matrix Display 42mm × 42mm is a simple and versatile LED display module featuring 64 individual LEDs arranged in an 8×8 matrix. It can be controlled row-by-row and column-by-column to create letters, numbers, symbols, patterns, and basic animations.
This LED dot matrix is a useful choice for Arduino and microcontroller projects where you need a larger visual display without using a conventional LCD or OLED screen. Each matrix contains 8 positive row terminals and 8 negative column terminals, providing direct access to all 64 LED segments.
Its compact design makes it suitable for educational electronics projects, digital displays, LED animations, scrolling messages, and DIY embedded applications.

Note: LED dot matrix displays are available in different configurations, so the exact pinout can vary between models. The pin configuration above corresponds to the 1388A-style matrix. Always verify the pinout of the specific module before connecting it to a circuit.
How the 8×8 LED Matrix Works
The display contains 64 LEDs arranged in 8 rows and 8 columns. Each LED is controlled by selecting the appropriate row and column. By rapidly switching different LEDs on and off, a microcontroller can create characters, numbers, icons, patterns, and animations.
For larger displays or scrolling text, multiple LED matrix modules can also be combined and controlled using suitable driver circuits or microcontrollers.
Applications
The 8×8 LED Dot Matrix Display can be used for:
- Arduino projects
- Microcontroller experiments
- Scrolling text displays
- LED animations
- Digital counters
- Character and number displays
- Simple graphics
- Robotics projects
- Electronic notice boards
- DIY clocks and timers
- Educational electronics projects
- Embedded display systems

How to solve PIN CONFIGURATION issue
As shown above the POSITIVE and NEGITIVE PINS of MATRIX MODULE are irregular and may lead to problems while controlling the LEDs. This issue becomes even more complex when choosing a different MODULE. The best way to solve these problems is rearrange the terminals based on FUNCTION of PIN instead of PIN NUMBER. After rearranging the PINS we will have something as below
